Gazing upon Hōren-ji Temple, can you sense the echoes of history? This temple, nestled in Tokyo’s Ōta ward, holds centuries of stories within its walls. Hōren-ji Temple is a Nichiren Buddhist temple. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Nichiren, the founder of this Buddhist sect, who is said to have died here.
The original Hōren-ji Temple has a rich history. It was established during the Kamakura period, sometime between 1264 and 1275. Legend links the temple’s founding to the powerful Saimyō-ji clan and their connection to Nichiren. During the Edo period, the eleventh head priest, Nichien, welcomed a notable guest: the renowned shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Ieyasu’s visit cemented the temple’s importance. It also helped spread Nichiren Buddhism throughout Edo (present-day Tokyo).
The temple’s serene gardens, once meticulously crafted by the 45th head priest Nisshin-in Nicchō, were sadly destroyed during the air raids of May 1945. The main hall itself also suffered this fate. Yet, from the ashes, Hōren-ji Temple rose again. The main hall was rebuilt in May 1941. A guesthouse and priest’s quarters were added in November 1943, signifying the community’s resilience. The five-storied pagoda, built in 1608, miraculously survived the bombings. It stands today as an Important Cultural Property, a beacon of the temple’s enduring spirit.
Every October, Hōren-ji Temple comes alive with the vibrant O-Eshiki festival. Thousands gather, carrying elaborate lanterns (mandō) and fire-pikes (matoi), celebrating Nichiren’s legacy with chanting and drumming. The energy is palpable, a testament to the enduring power of faith. Hōren-ji Temple is also known as a temple of good fortune within the Shichifukujin (Seven Gods of Fortune) belief system. It is believed that visiting during the first half of January, or the seventh day of any month, will bring you special blessings.
