Officially called the Tokyo Bay Connector Bridge the Rainbow Bridge is more than just a way to get from one place to another. It is a major tourist attraction. This bridge links mainland Tokyo to Odaiba.

The Rainbow Bridge has become iconic. It allows this part of Tokyo Bay to thrive. It is surrounded by top tourist attractions.

Let’s take a closer look. The Rainbow Bridge links Shibaura Pier and the Odaiba waterfront. This suspension bridge crosses northern Tokyo Bay.

Its official Japanese name is Tokyo Ko Renrakukyo. Kawasaki Heavy Industries built it. Construction began in 1987. It finished in 1993. The bridge stretches 798 meters. Its main span is 580 meters. The public chose the nickname “Rainbow Bridge”.

The Rainbow Bridge’s towers are white. This design choice helps them fit in. They harmonize with central Tokyo’s skyline when viewed from Odaiba. Lamps light up the bridge’s support wires. Solar energy powers these lights. They shine in red, white, and green each night.

You can reach the Rainbow Bridge on foot. Use Tamachi Station or Shibaura-futo Station. These are on the mainland side.

The Rainbow Bridge has two decks. The Shuto Expressway’s Daiba Route is on the upper deck. The lower deck holds the Yurikamome transit system. Walkways are on the outer sides. Tokyo Prefectural Route 482 runs in between. Small motorcycles are not allowed. Motorcycle passengers are also banned.

There are walkways on the north and south sides. They are on the lower deck. The north side shows inner Tokyo harbor and Tokyo Tower. The south side shows Tokyo Bay and sometimes Mount Fuji.

Walkways have limited hours. In summer they are open 9 am to 9 pm. In winter hours are 10 am to 6 pm. Access closes 30 minutes before closing time. You can bring bicycles if you push them. Riding is not allowed.

Walking across takes 20 to 30 minutes. Many stop at benches to enjoy the view. Pick the walkway side that has your preferred view. The view of Odaiba Seaside Park is most popular.

The Rainbow Bridge is beautiful. It is colorful even with regular lights. But when December arrives the bridge turns into a stunning rainbow. It is a must-see. It provides panoramic views of the Odaiba waterfront. Having a picnic here is a great experience. You can do this on the bridge’s benches or at nearby Seaside Park.
