Thirty-nine years young. That’s how old Yeung Ku-wan was when his life ended abruptly. We stand before Yeung Ku-wan Revolutionary Memorial a silent testament to a life cut short. This unassuming spot in Hong Kong’s Happy Valley Cemetery marks the final resting place of a pivotal figure in China’s revolutionary movement. Yeung Ku-wan a name perhaps less familiar than Sun Yat-sen’s yet equally vital to the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty.

Yeung Ku-wan was born Yeung Fei-hung in 1861 in Guangdong province. He later adopted the name Yeung Ku-wan. His life was marked by both remarkable achievements and tragic circumstances. Educated at St Paul’s College in Hong Kong he later worked for prominent companies. These included the China Merchants Group and the Sassoon Maritime Company. This exposed him to Western ideas fostering a strong sense of nationalism. He was known for his love of boxing and a quick temper when dealing with foreigners exploiting the Chinese.

In 1892 Yeung founded the Furen Literary Society. This organization aimed to awaken the Chinese people’s minds and instill patriotic fervor. Its motto was “Open up the people’s minds” and “Love your country with all your heart”. The society published revolutionary literature advocating for a republic. It laid the groundwork for a larger movement. Yeung later joined forces with Sun Yat-sen. Together they planned uprisings in Guangzhou and Huizhou. These were unfortunately unsuccessful.

The Qing government viewed Yeung as a serious threat. In 1901 they sent an assassin Chen Lin to eliminate him. Yeung Ku-wan was shot and killed in his own home on Gage Street. He died the following day. His death was a significant loss to the revolutionary cause. Interestingly he had wished for an unmarked grave. His tombstone simply bears the number 6348. This prevented its desecration by the Qing authorities.

Today Yeung Ku-wan’s story is remembered. A commemorative plaque now stands next to his grave. It details his life and contributions to the revolution. It rightfully recognizes his courage and sacrifice. While Yeung Ku-wan may not be as widely celebrated as some other revolutionaries. His role in the early stages of the Chinese revolution was undeniably crucial. This memorial site serves as a poignant reminder of his legacy and the fight for a free China. His story echoes throughout these hallowed grounds. A testament to a life dedicated to revolution even unto death.
