From bustling Edo to modern Tokyo, the Itabashi area has held a unique place in history. Itabashi, meaning “plank bridge,” takes its name from a remarkable wooden bridge spanning the Shakujii River. This bridge, dating back to the Heian period, was a significant feat of engineering for its time. Imagine travelers in the Edo period, weary from their journey, arriving at Itabashi. It was one of the Four Edo Post Towns, their first stop after leaving the shogunal capital. Itabashi offered respite, a place to rest and refresh before continuing their travels. Even the shogunate recognized Itabashi’s strategic location, maintaining execution grounds there. Itabashi wasn’t just a stop for travelers. It also housed a mansion for the prominent Kaga Domain, further highlighting its importance. Today, the original wooden plank bridge is gone, replaced by a sturdy ferroconcrete structure. Yet, the name remains. It connects us to a time when a simple wooden bridge stood as a symbol of connection and innovation. The area witnessed a major transformation in 1932. Nine towns and villages merged into Tokyo City, forming Itabashi Ward. It became a special ward in 1947. In that same year, several areas split from Itabashi to create Nerima Ward. This division reshaped the landscape. It contributed to the Itabashi we know today. Itabashi continues to evolve, bridging the past and the present.
