“Unearthed secrets await” is what I thought when I first came to this place. Today we explore Higashi-Takane Remains. This site whispers tales from the Yayoi period. It dates back to the late Yayoi period around the 3rd century. Discoveries here also include artifacts from the Kofun period around the 6th century.

Higashi-Takane Remains were discovered during housing development in the 1960s. Imagine this area transformed. Once just fields it became a window into the past.

Archaeological surveys revealed about 60 pit dwellings. These dwellings are just within the immediate site. Experts estimate that 100 to 150 dwellings existed across the entire area. That’s quite a village!

The Kanagawa Prefecture recognized the site’s importance. In December 1971 Higashi-Takane Remains became a designated historic site. At the same time the surrounding Sawtooth Oak forest was declared a natural monument. This helped preserve both nature and history.

Higashi-Takane Forest Park now surrounds the remains. It is the only prefectural park in Kawasaki City. It provides a beautiful setting to learn about the past.

The park features a Japanese white oak forest. It is a natural treasure of Kanagawa Prefecture. You can also find a wetland botanical garden here. The garden shows the natural cycle of the seasons.

The park is free to enter. It’s open year-round. However the office is closed from December 29th to January 3rd. Parking fees apply depending on the season and day.

Mizonokuchi Station is the closest access point. You can reach it via the JR Nambu Line or the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line. From there it’s a pleasant walk to Higashi-Takane Remains.

Walking through the park you are walking through history. Imagine people living here centuries ago. They built their homes farmed the land and lived their lives. Higashi-Takane Remains connects us to them. This ancient lawn square gives us a glimpse into their world.
