Whispers of history linger here at Tozen-ji. This isn’t just any temple. Tozen-ji stands as a silent witness to pivotal moments in Japan’s past. It holds a unique place in the annals of history.

Founded in 1610 by Ryōnan Zenji in Akasaka Tozen-ji found its current home in 1636. Originally situated directly on Edo Bay it earned the nickname Kaijō Zenrin the Zen forest above the sea. For many years Tozen-ji served as the family temple for numerous powerful daimyo clans including the Date and Ikeda clans.

But Tozen-ji’s story transcends its religious significance. In 1859 it became the site of Japan’s first British legation. Imagine Rutherford Alcock the Consul-General choosing Tozen-ji as his base. This was no ordinary decision. The location near the bustling Tokaido highway the most important road in Japan made it risky. Alcock’s choice ignited a powder keg.

The first Tozen-ji incident unfolded in 1860. Kobayashi Denkichi Alcock’s interpreter was murdered. This foreshadowed the violent clash of July 5 1861. Ronin samurai attacked the legation. Japanese guards fought back bravely. The battle was fierce. Alcock himself fired his revolver. Casualties were high. The attack highlighted the intense anti-foreign sentiment. Alcock’s demands for increased security and compensation were met. Even today sword cuts and bullet holes in the main hall’s pillars are a grim reminder.

A second incident occurred in 1862. Lieutenant Colonel Neale’s assassination attempt led to the permanent British military garrison. Tozen-ji ceased to be the British legation.

Tozen-ji stands as a testament to a complex history. It witnessed the dawn of international relations and the simmering tensions of a nation on the cusp of change. It’s more than just stones and wood. It’s a living history book. A place where the echoes of the past resonate even now.
