Founded in 1902 the Tokyo Women’s College of Physical Education has a rich history. It began as a juku a private school. This evolved into a college in 1922. The school’s founder Nikaidō Tokuyo had a clear vision. She believed women’s sports should be elegant and feminine. This would produce healthy mothers. Nikaidō spent two years in the UK studying at King’s Field College. She aimed to create a school where women would teach women. Her holistic approach to education was unique. It included aspects like food clothing and shelter. The goal was to raise an elite group of physical education teachers. Within four years of its founding Nikaido Taisojuku had trained 500 teachers. One notable graduate was Kinue Hitomi Japan’s first female Olympic medalist in the Taisho era.

The college gained university status in 1962. It’s located in Setagaya Tokyo. The campus is easily accessible.
