What if I told you a football club could rise to the top, fall to the bottom, and rise again? This is the story of Tokyo Verdy, a club whose history is as dramatic as a J-League playoff final. Right here, at Ajinomoto Stadium, Tokyo Verdy plays its home games. This stadium, shared with their rivals FC Tokyo, has witnessed the highs and lows of Verdy’s journey. Founded in 1969 as Yomiuri Football Club, Tokyo Verdy boasts a rich history. They are one of Japan’s most decorated clubs, with seven tier one league titles, five Emperor’s Cups, and six League Cups. Their early years were marked by success, including the Japan Soccer League Cup in 1979. The transition to the J.League in 1993 saw them renamed Verdy Kawasaki. They won the first two J.League championships, cementing their place in Japanese football history. The name “Verdy,” derived from the Portuguese word “verde” for “green,” reflects their jersey color, a homage to the Brazilian club Palmeiras. However, this golden era couldn’t last. Aging stars and a struggling economy led to a decline in performance. Verdy faced mounting debts, dwindling attendance, and increasing competition from rivals like Kawasaki Frontale. The move back to Tokyo in 2001, and the name change to Tokyo Verdy 1969, was an attempt to revive their fortunes. They aimed to rebuild their fan base in their original home city. Despite a win in the 2004 Emperor’s Cup, they were relegated to J2 in 2005. Nippon Television Network’s divestment of shares in 2009 marked a turning point. The formation of Tokyo Verdy Holdings, along with a crucial sponsorship deal with Xebio, provided a lifeline. The club persevered, relying on young talent from their youth program, enduring near-relegation in 2014, and finally achieving promotion back to J1 in 2023. They stand today, a testament to resilience and the unwavering passion of their fans, ready to write the next chapter in their tumultuous history. Tokyo Verdy, a club reborn, continues its journey at Ajinomoto Stadium, their green jerseys a symbol of hope and renewal.
