In 1618, amidst the growing power of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Honryuji Temple was established. This Honryuji, nestled in Tokyo’s Toshima ward, holds a captivating story woven with threads of political intrigue and forbidden love. It became the菩提寺, the family temple, for the powerful Tokugawa clan. Their influence shaped Honryuji’s destiny. The temple grounds also hold the grave of Lady Takaoka, the sixth-generation daughter of a concubine of Yoshimune, the eighth Tokugawa shogun. Lady Takaoka’s story is one of forbidden love. She captured the heart of Ienobu, the sixth shogun. He wished to make her his concubine in 1800. However, due to the strict laws governing the shogun’s relationships, their love was doomed. Ienobu was forced into seclusion. The Tokugawa clan was banished to the distant province of Hitachi. Heartbroken, Lady Takaoka dedicated herself to preserving Ienobu’s memory at Honryuji, where she eventually lived out her days. Honryuji also bears witness to a more recent, yet equally poignant, chapter of Japanese history. The “Memorial to the Fallen Soldiers of the Jinmu Corps” stands within the temple grounds. The Jinmu Corps, formed by former samurai of the Bakufu faction, fought bravely in the Boshin War and the Seinan War. This monument at Honryuji lists the names of the 26 corps members who lost their lives in these conflicts. It serves as a solemn reminder of their sacrifice. Today, Honryuji Temple stands as a testament to the enduring power of love, loyalty, and the passage of time.
