Did you know Daichouji Temple has a history spanning almost four centuries? It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith.

Welcome to the Honmyosan Daichouji Temple in Fuchu City. This temple belongs to the Nichiren sect. Its mountain name is Honmyo. Daichouji was founded in 1631.

Let’s delve into the story of this temple. A priest named Gyoshinin Nichihisa founded Daichouji in the Kanei era. That makes it nearly 400 years old. It was first established in Asabu Nagasaka Town.

Back then, there was a place called “Daichouji gate front.” It was a well-known landmark.

Inside Daichouji Temple, you can find the Meireikai Junishi retsuhi. This monument honors the war dead. Daichouji also houses the graves of Yoshiwara courtesans. One such grave belongs to Kichiemon Yoshisato of the Miuraya brothel. There is also a grave of Kouya.

During the Edo period, Daichouji’s Nichijo-sama was revered. People compared him to Shiba no Taishiten and Meguro no Fudoson.

To reach Daichouji Temple by train take the JR Chuo Line. Transfer at Musashi-境 Station to the Seibu Tamagawa Line. Get off at Musashi-Sakai Station. The temple is about a 15-minute walk from there. You can also take a bus bound for Musashi-Koganei Station.

The temple’s address is 5-9-5 Wakabacho, Fuchu City, Tokyo. The temple office shares the same address. You can contact them by phone or fax. The temple also has an email address.

Before you leave, take a moment to appreciate the main hall and the Nichijo hall. Remember the story of Daichouji. It is a story of faith and remembrance. It is a story etched in the heart of Tokyo.
