Established in 1489 Ryohō-ji temple stands before you. This Nichiren-shū Buddhist temple in Hachiōji western Tokyo holds a rich history. It’s a serene place of worship nestled among the city’s bustle.

Keiun Nicchō founded Ryohō-ji for his retirement. The temple’s mountain name is Shakujōzan. Initially associated with Honkoku-ji temple it later gained independence. Ryohō-ji is part of the Hachiōji Shichifukujin Pilgrimage. It enshrines Benzaiten the goddess of music eloquence and water. Many know it fondly as Moe-ji.

In 2009 Ryohō-ji unveiled anime-styled depictions of Buddhist and Shinto deities. This gave it the nickname Moe-ji a playful reference to the anime aesthetic.
