Here at Showa University we delve into its history. It is a private comprehensive medical university. Its campuses span Tokyo Yamanashi and Kanagawa.
Founded in 1928 as Showa Medical School it answered a critical need. Dr. Shusuke Kamijo saw a gap in medical training. National universities focused too much on academics. He wanted to teach basic clinical skills.
He envisioned physicians meeting real patient needs. His fiery passion led to ideal medical education. He wanted medical care that patients could trust.
In 1946 Showa Medical School became Showa Medical University. It broadened its scope beyond physicians. Clinical staff and researchers joined the ranks. The School of Pharmacy arrived in 1964. The School of Dentistry followed in 1977. Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences joined in 2002.
Today Showa University boasts eight hospitals and one clinic. They are located throughout Tokyo and Yokohama. The university prides itself on a high student-to-staff ratio.
Dr. Kamijo’s ethos echoes through the halls. “Shisei Ikkan” constant empathy and sincere devotion guide the university. For over 90 years this spirit has shaped generations of students. Showa University emphasizes team medical care. It actively contributes to modern healthcare.
But note Showa University has no link to Showa Women’s University. They simply share a similar name.
Showa University’s School of Medicine is one of Japan’s oldest private medical schools. Dr. Kamijo’s vision continues to inspire. The goal is to nurture independent minds. They seek profound intelligence and deep compassion in patient care.
First-year medical students spend a year at the Fujiyoshida campus. Here they study with students from other departments. Pharmacy Dentistry and Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences students study together.
Notable alumni include chef Yukio Hattori and plastic surgeon Katsuya Takasu. Even ophthalmologist Akira Toriyama was part of the teaching staff.
