Can you imagine a school built amidst rice paddies? That’s exactly how the old Takano Elementary School in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, began. Takano Elementary first opened its doors in 1963 as a branch of Kitakoba Elementary School. The grounds were surrounded by farmland, a testament to the area’s agricultural past. Inside the school’s local history museum, old farming tools donated by the community told a story of a simpler time. Children even cultivated rice in the school’s own paddy, connecting them to the land and their heritage. The school emblem, a precious ear of rice, symbolized this deep connection to the community’s agricultural roots. In 2022, after 59 years of serving the community, Takano Elementary closed its doors. Declining enrollment led to its merger with Kitakoba Elementary. A new, modern Kitakoba Elementary School building was constructed in a different location. The old Takano Elementary site is now being considered for a multi-purpose open space, a new chapter in its story. Although the school is gone, memories of rice planting, summer sleepovers, and talent shows live on in the hearts of former students. The legacy of Takano Elementary, with its unique history and close community ties, remains an important part of the Kitakoba area’s identity.
