Stepping back in time, imagine Tokyo in 1878. The small fishing village of Edo has transformed into a bustling metropolis. Now known as Tokyo, the “Eastern Capital,” it’s a city embracing modernization. Right here, at the heart of this transformation, stands the Kyu-Futagotamagawa-bashi pier, or as it’s more commonly known, the 旧富岡橋親柱. This unassuming pier is a relic of a bridge that once symbolized Tokyo’s rapid adoption of Western technology. Originally spanning the Kanda River, the bridge, known as the Danjō-bashi, was a marvel of its time. Designed by the American engineer Squire Whipple, the Danjō-bashi was a bowstring truss bridge, a testament to cutting-edge 19th-century engineering. The bridge was a significant upgrade from traditional Japanese bridges. It boasted a wider span of 9.1 meters, allowing for smoother transport and signifying the city’s growing ambitions. The construction, overseen by the Ministry of Public Works’ Akabane branch, cost 4058 yen, a considerable sum then, underscoring the importance placed on the project. Close to the prominent Shimada Danjō residence, the bridge became known as the Danjō-bashi. It quickly became a vital artery connecting the bustling Machiya-Senmonguchi to central Tokyo and beyond to the deeper Sumida River. It represented a symbol of progress and a gateway to the future for the rapidly modernizing city. Years passed, and Tokyo continued its relentless growth. By 1912, a new Danjō-bashi was constructed further north, necessitating the renaming of the original to Moto-Danjō-bashi, meaning “Original Danjō-bashi.” The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 dealt a devastating blow to Tokyo, rendering the Moto-Danjō-bashi unusable. Yet, rather than being demolished, the bridge found a new life. It was carefully relocated to its present location in the Hachiman Greenbelt, transforming from a vital transport link to a cherished historical monument. Now preserved as the Kyu-Futagotamagawa-bashi pier, the 旧富岡橋親柱 stands as a silent witness to Tokyo’s transformation. It whispers tales of a city embracing progress, while still cherishing its past. The bridge, though relocated and no longer functional, stands as a physical representation of a bygone era, a symbol of Tokyo’s journey from a fishing village to a global metropolis. It invites you to pause, reflect, and appreciate the layers of history woven into the fabric of this vibrant city.
