This seed was the Nichidai Koshinjuku, the precursor to what we now know as the Japan Women’s College of Physical Education. Initially located in the vibrant district of Yotsuya, the Nichidai Koshinjuku opened its doors to 49 eager students. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 devastated the region, rendering the original building unusable. Undeterred, the school relocated in 1924 to the serene neighborhood of Matsubara, now part of Setagaya Ward. This resilience became a hallmark of the Japan Women’s College of Physical Education. In 1926, the institution achieved a historic milestone. It was officially recognized as Japan’s first specialized school for physical education, marking a turning point for women in sports. The school continued to evolve, adapting to the changing tides of time. In 1950, the Japan Women’s College of Physical Education, then a junior college, emerged. A graduate program offering a Master’s degree in sports science followed in 1993. The curriculum expanded, embracing new fields like dance and child development.
