新小岩天祖神社 has a rich history. Its origins trace back to the Kamakura period. 平清重 a vassal of 源頼朝 is said to have been instrumental in its establishment. 平清重 also known as 葛西三郎 was a local lord.
Over the centuries, 新小岩天祖神社 has been known by several names. During the Edo period it was called 神明社 or 皇大神宮. It was also known as 葛西明神 and 三社権現. The enshrined deities include 大日霊尊, 天児屋根命 and 誉田別命. These are the great deities of Ise, Kasuga and Hachiman respectively.
新小岩天祖神社 has a close connection to the former 上平井 area. It is supported and maintained by people from 東新小岩 and 西新小岩. This reflects the shrine’s role as a focal point for the local community.

新小岩天祖神社 has undergone several renovations throughout its history. Major renovations occurred in 1641, 1712, 1748 and 1844. In 1883 and 1899, further repairs were carried out. In 1939, a major road project led to the relocation of the shrine. The main hall was renovated in 1968.
新小岩天祖神社 observes various annual events. These include the 例大祭 grand festival on August 18th. There is also the 夏越しの大祓 summer purification ritual on June 30th. The 新嘗祭 new harvest festival is celebrated on November 23rd. 除夜祭 a New Year’s Eve ritual happens on December 31st. 節分祭 a Bean-Throwing Ceremony happens in February.
The 月次祭 monthly festival is held on the 1st and 15th of each month. 玉串奉奠 is performed by participants. During the 月次祭, seasonal offerings are made. Those who wish to participate can donate 500 yen or more.
