Imagine villagers gathering here centuries ago. This is the story of Oshi-Tate Jinja. It is a Shinto shrine with a history stretching back to the late Nara period.
Oshi-Tate Jinja is located in Higashiomi City. Specifically it is found in Kitasakurai, Bodaijicho. Its coordinates are a precise 35.144667 degrees north. Also it is 136.238167 degrees east.
The main deities enshrined here are Kagutsuchi. Kagutsuchi is the god of fire. Also Izanami is enshrined. Izanami is a creator goddess. Izanami was moved here from Mount Kaga-Hakusan. This happened in 767 AD.
The main hall has a special design. It is a three-bay shrine. This style shows its importance.
Every sixty years Oshi-Tate Jinja holds a special festival. It is known as the Doke Festival. The next one is scheduled for 2031. To keep the tradition alive the preservation society performs Doke Odori. This happens annually. It coincides with the Setsubun Festival.
Oshi-Tate Jinja’s main hall and great gate are designated important cultural properties. Both were built during the Nanboku-cho period.
Let’s talk about the enshrined deities. Kagutsuchi has been here since ancient times. Izanami arrived later. She came from Mount Kaga-Hakusan in 767 AD. Her presence makes this place very special.
