Tokorozawa Municipal Minami Elementary School opened its doors in 1874. It was initially known as Gomei Elementary School. The school has seen many changes. It reflects the growth of Tokorozawa City.

Originally, education began in private homes. These homes were in Arakuma Village and other nearby villages. Over time, these small schools merged. They eventually became Gomei Elementary School.

In 1886, Arakuma School became Yatsuyama Elementary School. The Yamaguchimura Sugiya Soshichi served as a temporary school building. The area evolved through mergers and name changes.

By 1891, three schools combined. They formed Gomei Ordinary Elementary School. Yongenji Temple in Oaza Kumisawa became the temporary school site. New school buildings were established in 1894. West Gomei Elementary School and East Gomei Elementary School served the community.

The schools were consolidated again in 1900. A new Gomei Ordinary Elementary School was built. As compulsory education expanded in 1909, the school added classrooms. Fifth and sixth-grade classes were established.

In 1941, the school’s name changed. It became Gomei National School. This change reflected national reforms. In 1943, another name change occurred. The school became Tokorozawa Town Gomei National School.

After World War II, in 1947, the name changed again. It was now Tokorozawa Town Gomei Elementary School. With the implementation of the city system in 1950, it got its current name. It became Tokorozawa Municipal Minami Elementary School.

School lunches began in 1958. A pool and gymnasium were completed in 1972. Celebrations marked the school’s centennial in 1975. A soundproof management building was added in 1979.

The school celebrated its 30th anniversary of the name change in 1983. Renovations and additions continued. These included a multi-purpose room in 1989. Computer rooms were added in 1997. Internet access arrived in 1999.

In recent years, the school has focused on modernization. The kitchen was renovated in 2002. Seismic reinforcement work was completed in 2008. Pool repairs were done in 2009.

The school celebrated its 60th anniversary of the name change in 2013. Today, Tokorozawa Municipal Minami Elementary School continues to thrive. It fosters bright, thinking, and resilient students.
