“Is that Mount Fuji?” someone asks pointing at the mound behind Naruko Tenjin Shrine. Actually it is Fuji-zuka, created to worship Mount Fuji. Now, let’s step into the serene world of Naruko Tenjin Shrine. This Shinto shrine offers a tranquil escape from the surrounding skyscrapers of Nishi-Shinjuku.

Naruko Tenjin Shrine was founded in 903. It is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a respected scholar and politician. He is now revered as a god of learning. Imagine students coming here to pray for success in their exams.

Though the shrine was rebuilt after World War II using concrete, its garden-like setting is well-maintained. Notice the bright colors of the shrine. These colors are typical for Japanese Shinto Shrines. The red Torii gates mark each entrance to the grounds.

Just inside the main entrance, there is a water spout. Here, worshipers cleanse their hands and mouth. This purification ritual prepares them to pay their respects.

The main building houses the Shaden. This is where Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined. You can also see the Haiden. It is where prayers are offered to the deity in the Honden behind it.

During festivals, music fills the air from the Kaguraden. Also note the mound at the rear of the shrine. Climb to the top of Fuji-zuka. A small shrine awaits you there.

Naruko Tenjin Shrine offers a unique blend of history and spirituality. It is a place where tradition meets modern Tokyo. Take a moment to appreciate this peaceful oasis before we continue. It is only a short walk from Nishi-Shinjuku Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line.
