Established in 1988 Keisen University stands as a testament to its founder Michi Kawai’s vision. This private women’s college in Tama Tokyo initially blossomed from the Keisen School for Young Women founded in 1929. Keisen University’s unique educational philosophy intertwines Christianity horticulture and international peace studies.

Imagine a campus where every first-year student participates in compulsory horticulture classes. They cultivate vegetables and flowers on the university’s very own educational farm. This hands-on experience isn’t just about gardening. It’s about fostering respect for nature and instilling fundamental morals. The university’s herb garden a fragrant oasis is another popular spot for students to relax and refuel. The scent of herbs is often carried on the breeze.

Beyond the practical skills students develop a global perspective. Keisen University boasts study-abroad programs spanning California Thailand England and Australia. International collaborations further enrich the learning environment. Partnerships with institutions like North Western College in Iowa Silla University in Korea and Payap University in Thailand connect students to a wider world.

The university’s chapel isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for the community hosting regular services organ music and occasional concerts. The Christian center located within provides spiritual guidance.

Keisen University while small in size has produced notable alumnae and faculty. Among them are actress Sachiko Kokubu Christian writer and researcher Noyuri Otsuka and the esteemed historian Aiko Utsumi. These individuals have made significant contributions to various fields.

Sadly Keisen University announced its closure in March 2023. After the graduation of the class of 2023 it will cease to admit new students. This will bring an end to the unique educational experience offered at this remarkable institution. Yet the legacy of Michi Kawai and the values she instilled will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations. The spirit of Keisen University will live on.
