Buses rumble nearby. Ebisu Bridge stands before us a link between neighborhoods. It carries more than just traffic. It carries stories.

Ebisu that is where we are is a district in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward. Ebisu Bridge helps connect Shibuya and Ebisu.

Did you know that Ebisu’s name comes from Yebisu Beer? The area was home to the Japan Beer Brewery. This company later became Sapporo Breweries. In 1890 the brewery started selling Yebisu Beer. The beer became a hit.

To transport the beer a freight station opened in 1891. It was named Ebisu Station. People started calling the area around the station Ebisu.

The area changed a lot in 1994. The old brewery site became Yebisu Garden Place. It is a large complex with shops restaurants and a museum. Ebisu transformed into a stylish area. People like living here.

Ebisu Bridge connects Ebisu 1-chome and Hiroo 1-chome. Underneath Ebisu Bridge flows the Shibuya River.

Ebisu has changed a lot over the years. In the Edo period this area was farmland. It was near the Shibuya River.

After that the Japan Beer Brewery built its factory here. This changed everything. The area became known for beer. After the brewery moved the area was redeveloped. Yebisu Garden Place opened. Ebisu became modern and trendy.

The land here is valuable. In 2024 the residential land value was 1.47 million yen per square meter.

In 1928 the street near Ebisu Station was named Ebisu-dori. Several name changes occurred later. The surrounding towns merged. Finally it became the Ebisu we know today.

Ebisu Shrine is nearby. It was built in 1959. The shrine is dedicated to Ebisu the god of wealth.

Today Ebisu is a vibrant place. Many businesses are located here. In 2021 there were 1838 businesses. These businesses employed 42083 people.

Ebisu Bridge is more than just a bridge. It symbolizes Ebisu’s history and progress. It connects the past with the present. It is a vital part of this unique Tokyo district.
