“Is this where peace resides?” I hear you ask. Welcome to Enjyoji Temple also known as Enjoji. It is a serene Buddhist temple in Tokyo’s Chofu City.

Enjyoji Temple is a Jodo Shinshu temple. Jodo Shinshu is a school of Pure Land Buddhism. This temple offers a tranquil escape from city life.

Let’s delve into the story of Enjyoji Temple. Enjyoji Temple’s story began in 1632. A priest named Nishi Teruoka founded it. At that time the temple was within the grounds of the Hongan-ji. The Hongan-ji was called Hama Goten at that time. Hama Goten was the Edo branch temple of the Nishi Honganji. The Nishi Honganji is now in Tsukiji.

In 1657 a great fire struck. It was the Great Fire of Meireki. Enjyoji Temple moved to Tsukiji with the Hama Goten. Enjyoji Temple shared its history with the Tsukiji Honganji. Locals called Enjyoji Temple the “Lent Hall”. This was because it housed the principal image of the Tsukiji Honganji. The building was resistant to fire.

The Great Kanto Earthquake struck in 1923. Enjyoji Temple was destroyed. In 1928 Enjyoji Temple separated from Tsukiji Honganji. It relocated to its current location.

Enjyoji Temple is more than just a historical site. It is a place of spiritual practice. Enjyoji Temple has a variety of activities. These activities aim to deepen community bonds.

The temple runs several groups. There is a flower arrangement group. Also, there is an Esoteric art club. A karaoke club meets here too. The temple also hosts gatherings for locals. There is a senior citizen’s club for men over 65.
