Founded during the Tenpyo period between 729 and 749 AD Jojyuin’s original location was quite different. It was established thanks to the efforts of the monk Akai Hodo. He is also considered the founder. This original site was in the Tama area near present day Fuchuu city. However a tragic event altered its course. The Great Tokyo Air Raid of 1945 destroyed the original temple. It was forced to relocate.
The temple found a new home in the current location in Kotobuki City. It even merged with another temple. This was the Fukuzoe Yama Enmeiin Temple a temple without a resident priest. This union was not just about finding a new building. It created a combined history. Jojyuin now combined two histories and two places of worship.
