Right here, at Imperial University Elementary School in Tokyo, that question isn’t as outlandish as it seems. Imperial University Elementary School, nestled in Tama City, isn’t just a school. It’s a vibrant hub of learning and growth, infused with the spirit of Teikyo University. Established on April 1, 2005, on the former site of the Teikyo University Hachioji Campus, the school later moved to a new building in 2012. This new building, a sleek and modern structure, is located on the former site of Tama City Wadagabata Elementary School. The school is steeped in history and tradition, reflected in its education goals. These goals are aligned with the Teikyo University Group’s founding principles. Students are encouraged to strive for excellence. They are urged to develop broad knowledge, international perspectives, and strong character. But back to the mountain. The school grounds actually do include a small wooded area affectionately known as “Riyama” or “Back Mountain.” It’s an integral part of the school’s unique educational program. Students participate in the “Riyama Project.” They explore the woods, build forts, and learn from nature, fostering creativity and teamwork. It’s just one example of the hands-on, immersive learning experiences offered here. Imperial University Elementary School embraces a “self-flow” approach to education.
