The Ichikawa City Gyotoku Elementary School opened its doors in 1873. It started in the Jisho-ji Temple. This makes it one of the oldest elementary schools in Ichikawa City. Over the years, the school has changed its name several times. It was once called Gyotoku Jinjo Elementary School. It also was Gyotoku Ordinary Elementary School.
In 1917, disaster struck. A violent storm damaged the school building. The school was rebuilt in 1919. It featured a rare courtyard design.
During World War II, the school became Gyotoku National School. It took on a militaristic character. A woman named Aiko Tanaka attended the school during this period. She recalls soldiers billeted in classrooms. Horses grazed on the school grounds. Lessons were split into morning and afternoon sessions. Air raid sirens often interrupted classes.
After the war, the school became Ichikawa City Gyotoku Elementary School. The school provided powdered milk to students with American aid. This helped improve children’s nutrition.
Today, the Ichikawa City Gyotoku Elementary School continues to thrive. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023. The school has produced over 10,000 graduates.
Gyotoku is known as the “Town of Mikoshi.” Mikoshi are portable shrines used in festivals. About 80 percent of all mikoshi are made in Gyotoku. A banner in front of the school reads “Town of Mikoshi Gyotoku”. The school displays a large mikoshi inside. The local festival called the “Goka Town Festival” happens every three years. It involves carrying mikoshi for 16 hours straight.
