Beneath the watchful gaze of Shogunzuka, a tale unfolds. Here, atop Mount Higashiyama, Emperor Kanmu stood in 794. He surveyed the valley below, deciding the fate of Japan’s capital. He chose this very spot, this very view, to birth the city of Kyoto. Shogunzuka, the Shogun’s mound, holds more than just a breathtaking panorama. It cradles a secret, a guardian buried within its earth. A clay statue of a general, 2.5 meters tall, clad in armor, armed with a sword, iron bow, and arrow, lies entombed within the mound. Legend whispers that Shogunzuka rumbles when the city faces danger, a testament to its protective spirit. From this vantage point, one can see not only the sprawling city of Kyoto, but also landmarks like the Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, and Mount Hiei. The North Observation Deck, a vast wooden platform, offers an unparalleled view. It’s a newer, more elegant structure than its western counterpart. It almost appears to float above the trees, providing a clear line of sight from nearly 220 meters above the city. The mound itself stands beside Seiryuden Temple, home to a reproduction of a national treasure. A painting of Fudo Myoo, the fearsome Buddhist deity, surrounded by flames, sword and rope in hand. The original artwork, a vital object of worship for Shorenin Temple, is safely preserved elsewhere. Shogunzuka has witnessed history unfold. From Nitta Yoshisada’s rebel forces camping here in 1338 to anti-aircraft guns positioned here during WWII, it has seen battles fought and empires rise and fall. Even today, it remains a hidden gem. A secret known mostly to locals and taxi drivers, a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the breathtaking beauty of the present.
