Tucked away in the heart of Tokyo’s Shinagawa ward, Yoriki Shrine stands as a testament to a fascinating blend of history, legend, and local devotion. Yoriki Shrine is more than just a quiet place of worship. It’s a portal to a time when samurai roamed the seas and mythical figures shaped the destiny of Japan. The shrine is deeply connected to the legendary figure of Yamato Takeru. He is a prince celebrated for his bravery and military exploits.

One compelling story associated with Yoriki Shrine involves Yamato Takeru’s ill-fated sea voyage. As the story goes, while crossing the treacherous waters, a fierce storm threatened to capsize his ship. His wife, Ototachibana-hime, bravely threw herself into the raging sea to appease the wrathful sea god and save her husband’s life. Some accounts say that a piece of wreckage from Yamato Takeru’s ship drifted ashore near the present location of Yoriki Shrine. Local fishermen, moved by the tale, enshrined the piece of wood, marking the shrine’s humble beginnings. Another version claims that Ototachibana-hime’s clothing washed ashore, also leading to the shrine’s creation. Whatever the true origin, Yoriki Shrine honors both Yamato Takeru and Ototachibana-hime.

The current shrine building dates back to the Meiji period, a reconstruction after a devastating fire destroyed the original structure. Look closely at the shrine’s unique “mukuri hafu,” a distinctive curved gable roof found only on a select few shrines in Japan. Inside the main hall, you’ll find a striking shikkui painting, a vibrant depiction of the descent of the sun goddess, Amaterasu, from heaven. This artwork is attributed to the renowned Edo-era artist, Iizuka Chohachi. His works are few and far between, making this piece at Yoriki Shrine all the more precious.

Outside, near the hand-washing basin, stands a captivating bronze “kappa komainu,” a mythical creature with a bowl on its head, symbolizing the shrine’s connection to water and the sea. Also within the shrine grounds are two smaller shrines. One is dedicated to the soul of a whale, reflecting Shinagawa’s history as a prominent fishing town. The other commemorates a local townsman who bravely captured a large shark in Tokyo Bay but was tragically killed by it. These small shrines offer a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of the people who once called this area home. Yoriki Shrine may not be as grand as some of Tokyo’s larger temples, but its unique story and quiet charm offer a unique glimpse into the rich tapestry of Japanese culture and history. It’s a place where legend meets local lore, offering a truly special experience for those who seek it out.
