Didn’t you feel drawn to the Jakuenji temple’s serene presence? Jakuenji Temple stands as a testament to history and faith in Tokyo’s Bunkyo ward.

Jakuenji Temple is a Jodo Shinshu temple. It belongs to the Otani school. Its formal name is Hōrinzan Jakuenji. The temple’s main deity is Amitabha Tathagata.

Founded in 1635, Jakuenji Temple has a rich history. It was initially located in Kanda-Mihogicho. This was within the Edo-period Kanda district. In 1688, it moved to its present location.

The temple served mainly samurai families. This affected its fate during the Meiji Restoration. The temple faced decline due to decreased patronage. By 1897, Jakuenji Temple had lost half its land.

The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the Tokyo air raids of 1945 caused damage. Despite these hardships, Jakuenji Temple persevered.

After the war, the temple saw renewed activity. Parishioners formed the “Three Treasures Association.” They also built a communal cemetery called “Jakkoen”. Jakuenji Temple actively engages with its community.

For over 360 years, Jakuenji Temple has weathered many storms. Fires, earthquakes and air raids caused repeated damage. Yet, the temple overcame the turbulence of time. Supported by its parishioners, Jakuenji Temple continues to uphold Shinran Shonin’s teachings.

Today, Jakuenji Temple offers various services. These include family burials and general funeral arrangements. It also caters to large-scale funerals and corporate ceremonies. The temple also provides eternal memorial services.

The 法輪閣至心殿 is Jakuenji Temple’s modern hall. It can accommodate 40 seats. This hall serves as a venue for various ceremonies.
