“Is this really the place?” A visitor once asked. Renko-ji stands before us. It is a Buddhist temple in Tokyo. Its story is more than just ancient stones. It is entwined with international intrigue.

Renkō-ji is no ordinary temple. It was established in 1594. The temple was inspired by the God of Wealth and Happiness. It belongs to the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. This sect believes salvation lies in the Lotus Sutra.

But what makes Renko-ji truly special? It is said to be the location of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s ashes. Bose was an Indian revolutionary. His ashes have been preserved here since September 18, 1945.

Imagine the weight of history within these walls. According to the G.D. Khosla Commission, Bose’s ashes were placed in a box in Taipei. This followed his cremation. Bose died at Taihoku Army Hospital on August 18, 1945.

The ashes came to Renko-ji for a funeral ceremony. Rev. Mochizuki agreed to keep them safe. He was the father of the present Chief Monk. Bose’s funeral was held on September 18, 1945 at 8:00 p.m.

Netaji’s associates commemorate his death anniversary at the temple every year on August 18. Indian officials often visit Renko-ji. They offer prayers and pay respect to Bose. They do this at the pagoda that protects his remains. Jawaharlal Nehru visited in October 1957. He was the first dignitary. President Dr. Rajendra Prasad followed a year later. Indira Gandhi visited in 1969. Atal Bihari Vajpayee also visited as Foreign Minister and later as Prime Minister.

The ashes of Bose are placed in a small golden pagoda. Its golden surface shimmers softly.

However a controversy exists. The Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry said Bose did not die in a plane crash. Therefore, the ashes at Renko-ji are not his. The Indian Government rejected these findings. Narendra Modi also did not visit the temple when requested. This further fueled the controversy.

Despite the debate, Renko-ji remains a significant place. It holds a piece of history. It is a focal point for those who remember Subhas Chandra Bose. It is a place of faith and contemplation.

So as you stand before Renko-ji remember its layered story. It is a temple of peace. It is a center of controversy. It is a keeper of secrets.
