How about a serene escape? We are now standing before Anryuuji, a Nichiren Buddhist temple. Anryuuji stands in the tranquil Yanaka district of Tokyo. This temple offers more than just a visual treat. It provides a journey through time.

Anryuuji’s story began in 1630. The priest Nichiyo of Kyoto Hon法寺Tamon院 founded it. However some believe its origin dates back even further. Perhaps as early as 1596 to 1614. Nichiyo was a revered monk. He carried on the teachings of Saint Nichiren. Saint Nichiren was the founder of the Nichiren sect. Anryuuji became a direct branch of Kyoto’s Hon法寺 Temple.

Look closely. Anryuuji houses sacred relics. These include a portrait and remains of Saint Nichiren. There is also a statue of Kawakami Fuhaku. He was the founder of the Edo Senke tea ceremony school. A statue of Kishimojin is here too. Kishimojin is attributed to 阿万の方, foster mother of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s son Tokugawa Hidetada.

Pause for a moment. Can you feel the artistic spirit lingering here? The renowned Japanese painter, Gyoshū Hayami rests here. He was a master of Nihonga style. Hayami died in 1930.

Take a deep breath. Note the temple’s layout. It features a main hall a residence and guest rooms. There is also a parking area.

Anryuuji is easily accessible. It is a short walk from Nippori and Sendagi Stations. You can reach it in about seven minutes. Imagine worshippers from all walks of life visiting Anryuuji. They seek solace and inspiration.

Anryuuji is managed by a religious corporation. Its serene presence enriches the cultural tapestry of Tokyo. Anryuuji stands as a testament to faith art and history. It invites us to reflect on the past and find peace in the present.
