Did you know that Zonmyoji, more formally known as Chokei-ji Temple, has moved several times? Today, we stand before Zonmyoji. It is a beacon of community and history in Tokyo’s Setagaya district.

Zonmyoji is officially called “Shinshu Otani school Zakurotaizan Zonmyoji”. It was founded in 1647 by the priest Garyu. Originally, it was built in the Sakurada district of Edo, near what is now the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

Later, Zonmyoji relocated to Shiba Shinkaneicho and then to Mita. After the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, the temple was moved to its current location in Kitakarasuyama in 1927. It has been here ever since.

Throughout its 370-year history, Zonmyoji has served as a place to share the teachings of Shinran Shonin. Shinran was a prominent Buddhist figure. The temple has walked alongside the community.

Zonmyoji actively engages with local people. It supports disaster relief efforts. It also promotes grief care. The temple runs a “Zonmyoji Children’s Cafeteria”.

The head priest and his wife prepare a special keema curry at the Children’s Cafeteria. These activities showcase Zonmyoji’s commitment to the community.

Several annual events take place here. The Shoshinkai service is held in January. Spring and autumn Higan services are conducted in March and September. The Obon festival occurs in July. Hoonko services take place in November.

Zonmyoji also hosts various cultural activities. These include the “Kizuna no Kai,” a group that studies Shinran’s teachings. There is also a grief care group. Children’s gatherings and cooking classes are regularly held.

The temple offers a space for people to connect. People can learn and support each other. Zonmyoji provides many opportunities to engage with Buddhist teachings. It promotes community well-being.

Please take a moment to appreciate the serene atmosphere of Zonmyoji. It stands as a testament to resilience. It is a place of continuous community engagement. It is a place of learning. Zonmyoji embraces its history while actively shaping its future.
