Gazing upon Myōkō-ji Temple, a chilling tale unfolds. Myōkō-ji Temple in Nishisugamo holds a secret. It’s the final resting place of Oiwa, the vengeful spirit from the famous ghost story, Yotsuya Kaidan. This chilling tale, popular throughout Japanese history, speaks of betrayal, murder, and revenge from beyond the grave. Myōkō-ji Temple offers a glimpse into this dark narrative.

Myōkō-ji Temple quietly remembers Oiwa. Her story begins with her husband, Tamiya Iemon, a ronin desperate for a higher position. Iemon murders Oiwa’s father after a heated argument about their separation. Meanwhile, Naosuke, obsessed with Oiwa’s sister, Osode, commits a separate murder. These two men unite, deceiving the sisters into believing they will avenge their father’s death.

Oiwa’s tragic fate unfolds when Iemon becomes enamored with Oume, the granddaughter of a wealthy samurai. Though tempted, Iemon remains loyal to Oiwa. The Ito family, sympathetic to Oume, plots to disfigure Oiwa with poisoned face cream. The cream horribly scars Oiwa’s face. In her despair, she accidentally kills herself, cursing Iemon’s name with her dying breath.

Oiwa’s spirit haunts Iemon, driving him to madness and ultimately leading to his demise. Myōkō-ji Temple stands as a stark reminder of this tragic tale. Oiwa’s grave rests beneath a grove of gnarled trees, a chilling testament to her enduring presence. Visitors are warned to pay their respects. Legend says those who don’t risk suffering Oiwa’s disfigurement. Myōkō-ji Temple offers a unique blend of history, folklore, and a touch of the macabre.
