“Lost souls seeking solace,” a hushed voice echoed, “find their way to Myōjoin.” Here at Myōjoin Temple, the air hums with centuries of whispered prayers. Myōjoin isn’t just a temple. It’s a time capsule, holding the spirits of shoguns and scholars. Built in 1763, Myōjoin was commissioned by the 46th Chief Abbot of Zojoji Temple. It was intended as a resting place for the memorial tablet of Shogun Iyeshige, the ninth in the Tokugawa line. Myōjoin also became a vital center of learning, housing a complete collection of Ming Dynasty Buddhist texts. The temple served as a seminary for Jodo Shu Buddhism. It gained renown as a hub for both academic study and the practice of nenbutsu. Myōjoin holds a unique place in Jodo Shu history. It’s the first of twenty-five sacred sites in Tokyo associated with Honen Shonin, the sect’s founder. Within its hallowed halls resides a statue of Honen, crafted by the master himself and gifted to his samurai follower Kumagai Naozane. Over time, the Tokugawa family became devoted patrons of Myōjoin. They donated the memorial tablet of the tenth shogun, Iyeharu, along with numerous valuable artifacts. Myōjoin became a repository of cultural treasures, including the Honen Shonin den ekotoba, a pictorial biography of Honen. The temple grounds also boast two national registered cultural properties. These are the mud buildings of the Kumano-do Shrine and the Jodo-zo Library. Myōjoin isn’t just a sanctuary for shoguns and scriptures. It also houses the graves of prominent families, including Count Madenokoji and Baron Masana Maeda, a pioneer of industrial development during the Meiji Era. The tranquil Tsukikage-en garden, originally designed by the temple’s founder in the 18th century, offers a moment of peace amidst the bustling city. Myōjoin stands as a testament to its enduring legacy. The serene atmosphere and rich cultural heritage continue to draw visitors. Even in the heart of modern Tokyo, Myōjoin whispers tales of the past.
