Is it possible for a temple to embody the soul of a city? Some say Shenzhen has no soul. It is just a city of skyscrapers. But here in Nanshan District stands the 妈祖庙. It is also known as the Tianhou Temple. This temple whispers tales of a past that stretches back centuries.

The 妈祖庙 isn’t just a historical site. It’s a testament to Tianhou. She is also called Matsu. She is the Goddess of the Sea. She is worshipped by sailors and fishermen throughout Southeast Asia.

The temple’s story began in 1410. This was during the Ming Dynasty. Legend says that Admiral Zheng He encountered a fierce storm in the Pearl River Delta. He was near Chiwan. Tianhou appeared to Emperor Zhu Di. She told him she had saved the expedition. The emperor ordered a temple built to show his appreciation. Admiral Zheng planted a wish-giving tree in the courtyard. This further sanctified the temple.

Over the centuries the 妈祖庙 has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. The Shenzhen government refurbished it in the 1980s. Today the site features a large statue of Tianhou. She stands between two ponds. They represent the sun and moon or the yin and yang.

Step inside the gates. You will see incinerators for ghost money. You will also see the incense pavilion. Do not miss the wishing-giving tree planted by Admiral Zheng. The main hall has a statue of Tianhou. Her generals Chien Li Yen and Shun Feng Er flank her. A fortune teller is often on hand. A merchant sells offerings. These can be left on the tables outside.

The 妈祖庙 is more than just a place of worship. It is a cultural center. It is active with worshippers and curious tourists. The yearly festival in March draws thousands of attendees.

This nearly 600-year-old temple offers a quiet space. It allows one to reflect on the past. It stands in contrast to a sometimes crazy boomtown.

To get here take subway Line 2 to Chiwan station. Use Exit C. From there it is a short walk to the temple.

Remember the story of Tianhou. Think about the sailors and fishermen. They prayed for safe passage. Consider the emperors and admirals. They recognized her power. The 妈祖庙 stands as a symbol of Shenzhen’s hidden soul.
