Hidden within the bustling city of Tokyo, the Tenrikyo Shittoshi Branch Church holds a secret. It’s a secret of resilience, of community, and of unwavering faith. The Tenrikyo Shittoshi Branch Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring human spirit. Let’s uncover its story together.

Our tale begins in 1876 with a man named Kyuhei Shikitou. He was a successful businessman, running a dyeing business in the Shikitou district. Tragedy struck when Kyuhei was afflicted with an eye disease that left him nearly blind. He sought help from various doctors and healers, but to no avail. His condition worsened, and despair began to creep into his heart.

One day, Kyuhei’s wife, Take, heard about Tenrikyo from a man named Kunieki Masaki. Kunieki spoke of a God the Parent who desired the Joyous Life for all humanity. Take, desperate to help her husband, urged him to listen to this new teaching. Initially reluctant, Kyuhei finally agreed. He heard the words of Tenrikyo for the first time and a spark of hope ignited within him.

Kyuhei embarked on a three-day prayer, a desperate plea to God the Parent. On the third night, he experienced a vision of a white snake. Startled, he awoke to find the room bathed in a bright light. He found he could see clearly. The crippling eye disease was gone. Overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, Kyuhei dedicated his life to Tenrikyo.

He began sharing his newfound faith, leading prayer meetings and spreading the teachings of Tenrikyo. In 1883, he made his first pilgrimage to the Tenrikyo Headquarters in Nara Prefecture. There, he met with the Oyasama, the Foundress of Tenrikyo. He received further guidance and inspiration.

Kyuhei Shikitou, with the support of his wife and growing community of followers, established the Shikitou Branch Church in 1890. This church, the Tenrikyo Shittoshi Branch Church we stand before today, became a beacon of hope and a center for social welfare.

In the aftermath of World War II, the church expanded its services. It provided a nursing home, a facility for mothers and children, a daycare center, and a vocational training center. These services were vital to a community struggling to rebuild after the devastation of war. The Tenrikyo Shittoshi Branch Church became more than just a place of worship. It became an integral part of the fabric of the community, a place of solace and support.

The Tenrikyo Shittoshi Branch Church’s story is a story of transformation. It’s the story of a man’s journey from despair to faith, and of a community’s commitment to the Joyous Life. As you leave here today, carry with you the spirit of resilience and the unwavering faith of the Tenrikyo Shittoshi Branch Church.
