Founded in 1522, Daihōji Temple beckons us to explore its rich history. Daikakuin Nichijo established this tranquil oasis. In 1929, Daihōji Temple found its current home, relocating to Hiraoi, Edogawa City. Within its sacred grounds lies a treasured artifact, the Kōfū-ishi, a stone linked to the propagation of Nichiren Buddhism. Legend whispers of a miraculous healing. Manchida, a child of Nichiren, was gravely ill. Miraculously, upon touching the Kōfū-ishi, Manchida was restored to health. Manchida then left home, changed his name to Daikakuin Nichijo, and founded Daihōji Temple. The temple’s connection to Daikoku-ten, a deity of fortune and prosperity, is strong. Known locally as “Ipponmatsu Daikoku-sama,” Daihōji Temple hosts vibrant bean-scattering ceremonies during Setsubun. This ritual symbolizes warding off evil spirits and inviting good fortune. So, as you stand before Daihōji Temple, remember its journey through time, from its founding by Daikakuin Nichijo to its present-day role as a spiritual sanctuary.
