How about a school that stands for tradition and progress? That’s Taisei High School. It is located in the city of Mitaka in Tokyo. Taisei High School has a rich history. It began as Daisei Gakuen in 1888. Sugawara Kintaro founded it. It was initially a preparatory school. The school aimed to help students enter government institutions.

Over time, Taisei High School transformed. In 1897, it became Taisei Gakuen Junior High School. It underwent several name changes. It finally became Taisei High School.

In 1945, disaster struck. Air raids destroyed the school buildings. The school relocated to its current location. It is in Kami-renjaku, Mitaka City. After the war, reforms reshaped the education system. Taisei High School was re-established. It became a new high school. A junior high school was also created. The junior high school is currently closed.

Taisei High School offers various courses. It has a full-time general course. Special selection courses are available. There are also special advanced study courses. Students can choose literature or science advanced courses. An information advanced course is also available.

Taisei High School is committed to recycling education. In 2016, it was recognized. The school was named a “Recycling Education Promotion School”. It was the first of its kind nationwide. It included elementary, junior high, and high schools.

Getting to Taisei High School is easy. From Mitaka Station, it is a 20-minute walk. Buses are available from Kichijoji Station and Musashi-境 Station.

Taisei High School faced labor disputes in 2003. A teacher was dismissed. The teacher was accused of physically punishing a student. The labor union protested. They distributed leaflets. The school sued the union. The dismissed teacher was the vice-chairman of the union. The union claimed the dismissal was unfair. They organized strikes.

The legal battles continued for years. In 2006, the Tokyo High Court ruled. The court supported the lower court’s decision. The dismissal was deemed invalid. The school and union eventually settled in June 2008.

Many notable people have graduated from Taisei High School. These include scholars, politicians and artists. Kambe Masao was a sociologist. Kazami Hideji was a judge. Hotsumi Ozaki was a writer.
