Tucked between bustling streets in Tokyo, Daichozan Myoshoin Temple offers a glimpse into a rich history. This Tiantai Buddhist temple, also known as Daichozan Myoshoin Kanshoin, has weathered centuries, fires, and even earthquakes. Daichozan Myoshoin Temple was founded during the Muromachi period, sometime between 1532 and 1558. Its founder, the priest Kaishin, established the temple under the watchful gaze of Mount Fuji. Later, in 1668, the temple became affiliated with the Tendai sect. Tragedy struck in 1617 when a fire, known as the “fire during the Manzo Roho era,” swept through the temple, destroying records and artifacts. The temple was rebuilt in 1658, and renovations continued into the 18th century. In 1718, the main hall was reconstructed, and in 1735, a memorial stone was erected. This stone honors a priest and mentions a sacred statue, possibly a statue of Ashuku Nyorai, housed within Daichozan Myoshoin Temple. The temple’s Kannon statue, enshrined in the Kanshoin hall, is believed to hold special significance. The temple complex includes the Kanshoin, Shimyodo, and Hakkotsu-do halls. Outside the main grounds, the Betsutenzan hill stands as a quiet reminder of the temple’s long history. More recent renovations, spurred by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, have ensured the temple’s survival into the modern era. Daichozan Myoshoin Temple stands as a testament to resilience and faith, a serene sanctuary amidst the vibrant energy of Tokyo.
