“A tanuki tomb?” a visitor whispered, eyes wide with curiosity. Here at Tamon-ji Temple, nestled in the Sumida ward of Tokyo, the air hums with a blend of serenity and the supernatural. Tamon-ji, also known as the “Tanuki Temple”, is a testament to a time when folklore intertwined with daily life. Originally founded between 957 and 961, Tamon-ji has weathered the storms of time, including the devastating Tokyo bombings of World War II. Its thatched-roof gate, a survivor of a fire in 1718, stands as a symbol of resilience. Tamon-ji is dedicated to the god Vaiśravaṇa, but its claim to fame extends beyond traditional Buddhist worship. Legend speaks of a time when the area surrounding Tamon-ji was overrun with yokai, mischievous supernatural creatures. A determined monk named Bankai established the temple to quell the yokai menace, even blocking their grotto. The enraged tanuki, shapeshifting raccoon dogs of Japanese folklore, retaliated, haunting Bankai’s dreams in the terrifying form of the giant Ōnyūdō. In desperation, Bankai prayed to Vaiśravaṇa for intervention. The deity dispatched an envoy to reason with the tanuki. The following morning, the villagers and Bankai discovered the tanuki lifeless at the temple gate. Overcome with remorse, Bankai constructed a tomb for the creatures, a unique feature that still stands within Tamon-ji grounds, alongside statues of the mischievous tanuki. Tamon-ji Temple offers a unique glimpse into the fascinating intersection of history, spirituality, and folklore. It stands as a poignant reminder of Tokyo’s rich past, a place where ancient legends linger amidst the modern cityscape.
