Intrigued by whispers of ancient clans, we find ourselves at the enigmatic Tuchiizuka Kofun. This keyhole-shaped tomb, dating back to the 5th century, stands as a testament to a powerful local chieftain’s influence. Tuchiizuka Kofun is part of the larger Komae Kofun Cluster, a sprawling necropolis that once housed numerous burial mounds.
Tuchiizuka Kofun, with its circular mound approximately 35.2 meters in diameter and a height of 4.4 meters, isn’t the largest in the cluster. Yet, its well-preserved form offers a valuable glimpse into the past. Its eastern side features a small, rectangular protrusion, a common architectural element of keyhole-shaped tombs. This protrusion likely served as a ceremonial platform. Excavations at Tuchiizuka Kofun have yielded cylindrical clay figures known as haniwa, providing further insights into the burial practices of the era. These haniwa, often placed around the mound’s perimeter, are believed to have served a symbolic purpose, perhaps representing guardians or offerings for the deceased.
The discovery of numerous cylindrical haniwa shards in the surrounding moat suggests a practice of ritualistic placement.
