Tucked away in the bustling heart of Tokyo, Kokuryo Jinja Shrine offers a tranquil escape. It beckons with a rich tapestry of history, whispering tales of ancient deities and resilient communities. Kokuryo Jinja wasn’t always known by this name. It started as two separate entities: the Sixth Heaven Shrine and the Shinmei Shrine. The exact origins of both shrines remain shrouded in mystery. We do know that the Sixth Heaven Shrine originally stood in the Soyama area, near the Tama River. This shrine was dedicated to the sixth of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, protectors of the Buddhist deity Yakushi Nyorai. As the Edo period dawned and the Meguro River was tamed, frequent floods plagued the area. This forced the relocation of the shrine to present-day Hachimandai, along with the nearby Kosho-ji Temple. The shrine then became the guardian shrine of Kokuryo Village. Over time, it transitioned from its Buddhist roots to become the Shinto shrine we know today, dedicated to the god of creation, Kamimusubi-no-kami. The Shinmei Shrine, also initially situated near the Tama River, had strong ties to the local Soga, Ogawa, and Kobayashi clans. They relocated to the present site of Kokuryo Jinja in 1640. In 1909, the enshrined deity of Shinmei Shrine was changed to Amaterasu-Omikami, the sun goddess. Finally, in 1963, the two shrines merged. A new wooden hall was constructed, giving birth to the Kokuryo Jinja Shrine as we see it today. Within the serene grounds of Kokuryo Jinja stands a magnificent wisteria tree, the “Millennial Wisteria.” This venerable tree, estimated to be between 400 and 500 years old, has witnessed the ebb and flow of time. It predates the merging of the shrines, standing as a silent sentinel during the relocation and transformation of the area. The wisteria, known for its longevity and vibrant purple blossoms, is revered as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. It’s one of the “Chofu Hakkei,” or eight scenic views of Chofu City. During its blooming season, the shrine hosts the “Kokuryo Sennofuji Festival,” celebrating the beauty and enduring spirit of this remarkable tree. Today, Kokuryo Jinja stands as a testament to the resilience of tradition in the face of change. It embodies the spirit of community and offers a peaceful sanctuary amidst the vibrant energy of Tokyo.
