Forty-one years without a dormitory. That’s a long time for Ochanomizu University. The International Student Dormitory Daiyama-sha has a rich history. It stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to international exchange. Built in 2022 it boasts seven stories and 450 rooms. This new dormitory called “Keibunkan” combines student housing with extracurricular activity facilities.
Ochanomizu University opened in 1875 as Tokyo Women’s Normal School. Its name changed many times. The campus also moved from Ochanomizu to its current location in Bunkyo Ward. Even before the war the university had on-campus housing. After the war and its renaming as Ochanomizu Women’s University on-campus dormitories existed until 1956. For over half a century students lived off-campus.
Before the Keibunkan building there were three off-campus dormitories. These were Koishikawa Dormitory the International Student Dormitory (commonly known as Daiyama-sha) and Ochanomizu University Students Community Commons. The Keibunkan’s completion marks the return of on-campus housing. It represents a significant milestone in the university’s 150-year history. This new facility provides much-needed accommodation for the university’s growing international student population.
The International Student Dormitory Daiyama-sha isn’t just a place to sleep. It’s a hub for cultural exchange. Students from many countries live together.
