Gazing across the Sumida River, can you envision a bridge crafted entirely of wood? This is the story of Yotsuogi Bridge in Tokyo. Yotsuogi Bridge isn’t just a way to cross the Sumida River. It’s a testament to Tokyo’s resilience and growth. It connects Katsushika and Sumida wards, a vital artery in the city’s bustling network.

The current Yotsuogi Bridge, a steel marvel, wasn’t the first to grace this spot. In 1922, a wooden Yotsuogi Bridge was built, a necessary link between central Tokyo and Katsushika following flood control efforts along the Arakawa River. This bridge, though functional, was eventually replaced. Imagine horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles rumbling across its wooden planks. This original bridge also played a somber role in the aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, with rumors of tragic events occurring near its Sumida ward end.

The need for a more robust crossing became evident as traffic increased. Construction on the present Yotsuogi Bridge began in 1939. However, World War II interrupted the project. Construction resumed in 1950, with the bridge finally opening in July 1952. The opening ceremony was a grand affair. Crowds gathered, eager to witness the dawn of a new era for the area. This new bridge, sleek and modern, stood in stark contrast to its wooden predecessor. Interestingly, while under construction, it was referred to as both “New Yotsuogi Bridge” and “Second Yotsuogi Bridge”. The older wooden bridge remained open for pedestrian use until the completion of Kinekogawa Bridge in 1969.

Yotsuogi Bridge stands as a symbol of progress. It represents Tokyo’s ability to adapt and rebuild. As you admire its steel structure, remember the wooden bridge that once served this vital crossing. Yotsuogi Bridge carries not only vehicles but also the echoes of Tokyo’s rich past.
