“Home to Japan’s widest pine tree” that’s the unusual claim to fame for Zenyoji Temple. Welcome to this tranquil escape in Tokyo. It is a place where nature and spirituality intertwine.

Zenyoji Temple, founded in 1527 is a Shingon Buddhist temple. It offers a serene contrast to Tokyo’s bustling city life. The main hall is dedicated to Jizo Bosatsu. Jizo Bosatsu is a Buddhist deity of mercy. The hall was built in 1845. Take a moment to appreciate its traditional architecture.

But the true marvel here is the Yogo no Matsu pine tree. Registered as a National Natural Property, this tree is over 600 years old. It is the oldest and widest pine tree in Japan. Its branches spread out 30 meters in all directions. Notice the supports holding up its massive limbs. Legend says Buddha used its branches as a bridge between heaven and earth.

The Niomon Gate welcomes you with its two guardian deities. These nio guardians stand on either side of the entrance. The Fudo-do building houses Fudo-Myo. Fudo-Myo is a wrathful Buddhist deity. He is responsible for clearing a path towards awareness. He uses fire and sword.

Explore the grounds further to discover a tribute to the Shikoku pilgrimage. A pathway features 88 stone shrines. Each shrine contains soil from one of the 88 temples on the pilgrimage route. This offers a miniature spiritual journey.

Zenyoji Temple is known for its accessibility. The temple has made great efforts. It made the temple accessible to all visitors including wheelchair users. Ramps are available for nearly all buildings. The path under Yogo no Matsu is fully accessible.

Zenyoji is a bit off the beaten track. However repeat visitors to Tokyo are drawn to its unique charm. Horticulture enthusiasts find it especially rewarding. It’s a refreshing break from the city’s hustle.
