Did you know a swordsmith created Buddhist statues? That’s just one surprising fact about Zenmyo-ji Temple. We are standing before Zenmyo-ji Temple a serene escape in bustling Tokyo. This temple offers a unique blend of history and tranquility.

Zenmyo-ji Temple belongs to the Tendai Sect. Though its founding year is unknown it holds treasures and stories. Inside you will find the “Seated Statue of Amida Nyorai”. Actually there are two statues. Both large and small versions exist. These statues are National Important Cultural Properties. They were crafted by swordsmith Sukechika Fujiwara. Imagine a master of the sword creating sacred art.

The temple is also the final resting place of Shintiost Yoda Iori. Also interred here is imperial loyalist Daimyo Saionji Sanemitsu. These figures add to the temple’s historical significance.

Step into the tranquil garden. This is a highlight of Zenmyo-ji Temple. Manicured seasonal flowers bloom throughout the year. The garden offers a place of rest and serenity. It is a welcome contrast to the city outside.

The stone monument at Zenmyo-ji Temple’s gate has an engraving. It cautions visitors against bringing fragrant vegetables or alcohol. This reminds us of the temple’s sacred nature. Iori Iida’s former residence was actually built on this site. He was a mid-Edo period Shinto theologian.

Zenmyo-ji Temple houses a statue of Amitabha Buddha cast in 1253. This statue has been designated an important national cultural treasure.

Zenmyo-ji Temple offers free admission. It is easily accessible from Fuchu-hommachi Station. The station is on the JR Musashino and Nambu Lines a mere three-minute walk away.
