The church’s journey began in 1935 with Reverend Ken Saeki’s vision. He started his mission in Gotanda, Shinagawa Ward. By 1941, it was officially known as the Gotanda Church of the Church of Christ in Japan. Tragedy struck in 1945 when air raids destroyed the church building. Undeterred, Reverend Saeki continued services in a meditation hall within the occupied Gotenyama Hara House. 品川キリスト教会 faced another challenge when asked to vacate the premises after the occupation ended. However, two successful charity bazaars in 1949 provided the funds to rebuild. In 1951, a new chapel arose on the church’s current location. The 品川キリスト教会 continued to grow. In 1966, the Shinagawa Regional Center was established to connect with the community. This center offered activities like dance and piano classes, fostering a bond between the church and its neighbors. The spirit of those early bazaars lives on. The annual Autumn Bazaar, a cherished tradition at Christ Shinagawa Church, draws over 3,000 people. It’s a vibrant event showcasing handmade crafts, clothing, and game corners. The Messiah Choir, formed in 1992, is another testament to the church’s vibrant community. Starting with 150 members, it has grown to almost 180. Their performances are a powerful expression of faith. The current Reverend, Kazuo Yoshimura, emphasizes the church’s welcoming atmosphere. He invites everyone to experience the church through services, classes, concerts, and musicals. Christ Shinagawa Church offers solace and connection amidst the city’s vibrant pulse.
