“A school is a place where minds grow.” Here at Wakoshi City Fifth Elementary School this sentiment rings especially true. It is more than just a building. It is a place where futures begin.

Wakoshi City Fifth Elementary School opened its doors in April 1970. It began with 705 students and 24 staff members. The school initially used part of the Wakoshi City Fourth Elementary School. The current school building was completed in September of that year. This date is celebrated as the school’s founding day. In October 1970 the school officially became Wakoshi City Fifth Elementary School.

In 1975 the school district changed due to the opening of Wakoshi City Hirosawa Elementary School. A school flag was established in September of that year.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary a ceremony was held in November 1979. As part of the anniversary projects Goboyama or Gobou Mountain was completed. It included “Gobou no Taki” which translates to Gobou Falls. Also created were “Satsuki no Ike” which translates to Satsuki Pond and “Chibikko River” which translates to Tiny River.

Major renovations took place in August 1989. This coincided with the 20th anniversary. An athletic field was added. Another anniversary celebration was held in November. A 25th-anniversary ceremony occurred in September 1994. The schoolyard was renovated in August 2003. Earthquake-resistant construction was done in August 2005.

In August 2007 the gymnasium floor was replaced. Seismic reinforcement work was completed and air conditioning was installed in all classrooms. Improvement work to the south and rear gates was done in August 2009. Toilet renovations were made in August 2013. Non-structural seismic strengthening work was done in August 2014. Lighting equipment was replaced.

Additional lighting work occurred in August 2015. In August 2017 Goboyama was renovated by the PTA. Pool renovations and gate repairs were completed in December 2018. A new Satsuki no Ko Children’s Club and Wakou Children’s Club was built in March 2019. The school celebrated its 50th anniversary in April 2019.

Wakoshi City Fifth Elementary School has educational goals. These include nurturing children’s rich hearts. It encourages children to learn and be healthy. The school also aims to cultivate children who love their community.
