What secrets does a cave hold? Here at the entrance to 口洞, the air feels different. Cooler. Older. This isn’t just any cave. This is 口洞, a portal to another time.

口洞, nestled within the Wugui Hills of Zhongshan, whispers stories of a land shaped by time and tides. Millennia ago, this region was submerged beneath the Pearl River estuary. Slowly, land emerged from the water, sculpted by alluvial silt carried by the river. The northern reaches of Zhongshan, where much of the urban area now sprawls, didn’t fully surface until the Ming Dynasty. Imagine the transformation. From underwater depths to fertile fields. This area has witnessed remarkable changes.

口洞, etched into the very bones of these hills, remembers it all. The Tang Dynasty, when the land was prized for its sea salt production. The Song Dynasty, when a fortified settlement named Xiangshan marked the first official use of the name that would echo through centuries. This region was already thriving then, evolving into a county in 1152. Following the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, descendants of court officials, even members of the imperial family, sought refuge in Xiangshan.

口洞 watched as the landscape continued to shift, as embankments arose during the Qing Dynasty to protect the burgeoning farmland. The cave witnessed the turmoil of the First Opium War, as Lin Zexu arrived in Xiangshan to expel British traders. The clash of empires, the echoes of conflict, all reverberated around 口洞.

The winds of change continued to blow through this region. From Xiangshan, individuals like Sun Yat-sen ventured out, seeking knowledge abroad. Their experiences shaped the destiny of a nation. It was in honor of Sun Yat-sen, known as Sun Zhongshan, that Xiangshan was renamed Zhongshan in 1925. 口洞, a silent sentinel, witnessed this tribute to a native son.

Through Japanese occupation, the Chinese Civil War, and into the modern era, 口洞 has endured. A testament to the resilience of nature. A whisper of forgotten ages. Now, as you stand at its threshold, feel the weight of history. Listen to the echoes of the past. 口洞 awaits, ready to share its secrets with those who dare to venture within.
