Could you believe that this serene temple before us has roots stretching back over a thousand years? We’re standing before Nanhai Guanyin Temple. It is a place of profound history and spiritual significance.
Let’s step back in time to the Northern Song Dynasty. It was the year 990 AD. This temple was first established then. It was initially known as Nanhai Guanyin Palace. Imagine this area centuries ago.
The temple has faced many challenges over the years. It was enlarged. It was burned down. It was rededicated several times throughout history. The version you see now was completed in 1996. Think of the dedication and resilience required to rebuild such a sacred place.
In 1996, Nanhai Guanyin Temple officially opened its doors to the public. Abbot Shi Xincheng held a grand canonization ceremony. Zhao Puchu the Venerable Master of the Chinese Buddhists Association inscribed a plaque for the temple. The plaque reads “Nanhai Guanyin Temple”.
Look around you. Notice the layout. The central axis guides you through the Paifang and Heavenly Kings Hall. Then there is the Mahavira Hall and finally the Guanyin Hall. There are over 20 halls and rooms on both sides. This includes the Bell Tower and Drum Tower. Don’t miss the Sixth Patriarch Huineng Hall.
Guanyin Hall is the heart of Nanhai Guanyin Temple. It enshrines Guanyin Bodhisattva. This is a revered figure of compassion.
Take a moment to appreciate the pond in front of the temple. It spans 30 mu and is filled with lotus flowers. The temple has become the largest Buddhist shrine in Foshan. Thousands of worshippers visit each year.
