“A statue of Kannon.” That’s what two brothers found in their fishing net long ago. This finding led to the creation of Senso-ji. Today we stand before a testament to Tokyo’s oldest temple. It is a place of peace for over 30 million yearly visitors.
Senso-ji is also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple. It stands as a beacon of Buddhist tradition in the heart of Tokyo. Imagine this area back in 628 AD. Two fishermen were on the Sumida River. They pulled up their nets and found a statue of Kannon. Kannon is the Bodhisattva of compassion.

The Hōzōmon is the inner gate to Senso-ji. It is a two-story gate. The second story holds many of the temple’s treasures. The first story features two statues and large lanterns.
